Director, Government Relations, LATAM
Location: Sao Paulo, Brazil

Position Summary:

The position promotes Thermo Fisher Scientific by developing positive relations with senior strategic decision makers, industry organizations and leaders at relevant Latin American government bodies and institutions. The role’s primary focus is Brazil, and we expect the role to extend its reach to other Latin American countries – especially Mexico, Chile, Argentina and Colombia as well. The ideal candidate will contribute to growing Thermo Fisher’s business in Latin America by establishing new strategic business opportunities with federal, state/provincial and local government bodies in Brazil and across Latin America; secure economic development subsidies; and provide counsel to the Latin America and global leadership teams on investment and commercial opportunities.

Essential Job Functions and Expectations:

  • Work closely with Thermo Fisher’s Latin America Leadership Team and Global Government Relations team to develop Thermo Fisher’s government relations strategy, programs and resource plan to meet Latin America’s overall growth strategies and strategic segment priorities;
  • Develop and maintain positive relations with senior decision makers in Brazil, Mexico and other Latin American government bodies relevant to Thermo Fisher business, including but not limited to those that oversee pandemic response, precision medicine, environmental protection and food safety.
  • Establish channels for Thermo Fisher’s Latin America and global executives to communicate our strategy and partnerships with senior federal, state/province and local decision makers in Brazil and elsewhere in Latin America;
  • Organize and support high-level engagement opportunities including senior executive meetings with ministry officials, scientific forums and engagement with leaders of state/provincial and local government bodies, like health minister and provincial/state and local secretaries and research institutes.
  • Advise how to respond to federal, provincial/state and local government policy and priority changes, industry trends, technology development and investment direction; Provide input and advice to Latin America Leadership Team on business development opportunities and long-term business strategies including new investment locations.
  • Develop and maintain good relations with Academia, peer companies, industry associations, industry experts and critical semi-government research institutions related to Thermo Fisher’s business.
  • Actively participate in various trade and commercial programs between Latin America countries and the U.S. to establish contacts with peer companies and customers to promote and expand Thermo Fisher business opportunities.
  • Qualifications:
  • Personal attachment to the mission of enabling our customers to make Latin America and the world healthier, cleaner and safer;
  • Unquestionable and consistent commitment to business ethics and personal integrity;
  • Bachelors or above education; degree in foreign affairs, political science or similar preferred
  • Minimum 10 years relevant experience in government affairs or related fields, preferably with a multinational corporation with significant Brazil or Latin America interests; have government and industry contacts;
  • Experience with Latin America government organizations or bilateral institutions;
  • Strong business acumen and an ability to succinctly communicate complicated issues in uncomplicated ways; ability to work with commercial sales and marketing team to assess business opportunities and gaps and set strategy to close those gaps;
  • Strong analytical skills and strategic mentality; Able to align company strengths and goals with strategic government opportunities and challenges, leading to business growth;
  • Self-directed and self-motivated with a high bias for proactive action;
  • Ability to work under pressure with a positive attitude; ability to navigate in a complex organization;
  • Openness to hold Powers of Attorney for one or more legal entities in Brazil.
  • Portuguese as native language. Fluent spoken and written English and Spanish.
