- Gather and verify information through interviews, observation and research ensuring that the news reported remains objective and balanced
- Monitor sources for breaking news, e.g., wires and social media
- Plan, write, edit, and voice news broadcasts
- Finalize content using digital audio editing software
- Maintain crucial deadlines in order to provide news stories in a timely fashion
- Repackage content from producers and field reporters for newscasts
- Identify technical equipment and resource requirements for recording interviews and other audio material
- Produce features and interviews as assigned
- May specialize in a particular field of news broadcasting (e.g. political, traffic, finance or military)
- Prepare written content, visual images, audio material and video footage for websites, blogs or other social-media platforms
- Position will include shift work. Possibly nights, weekends/holidays etc.
- Expertise using Microsoft Office suite and social networking platforms
- To be knowledgeable and up-to-date on local and national trends and/or to have specialized knowledge of subjects/events related to on-air topics
- Pleasant, charismatic and well-controlled voice; excellent pronunciation
- Well-rounded communication skills for conducting interviews
- Excellent writing and editing skills; proficient in grammar
- Proficiency in media production and broadcast systems
- Ability to plan and organize, set priorities and multi task in a fast-paced environment
- Bilingualism is a plus
- 3+ years' experience in on-air journalism in smaller market or college station
- 4 – year college degree, preferably in Broadcast Journalism or Communications
- Respect for others and a strong belief that others should do this in return
- Ability to work within prescribed guidelines without needing close supervision
- Problem solving skills within established procedures
- Understanding of when to seek guidance for unforeseen problems
- Close attention to detail
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to act in a professional manner and collaborate with colleagues of different levels
