Main purpose of job:


To deliver impactful visits to Brazil by UK Government Ministers, senior officials, external experts, Parliamentarians and members of the Royal Family in support of the Embassy's objectives.

Occasional support for visits by Brazilian delegations to the UK.

Support the UK's Network in Brazil (the Embassy in Brasilia and the consulates in other cities) in organising impactful HMA visits within Brazil.

Provide corporate leadership for the Political Team across Brasilia, Sao Paulo and Rio.


Roles and Responsibilities:


The role will also support the Political Counsellor who has oversight of the political team of approximately 20 staff across three locations.

In particular, the Senior Visits Officer will help ensure excellent briefing, planning and record keeping, as well as support team wellbeing to support delivery to a high standard.

As part of this, the role will support the Senior Political Advisor to plan and track senior engagement with the Brazilian Executive and Congress and coordinate across the Embassy as needed.


We are looking for an energetic, organised individual with excellent attention to detail who is as comfortable working with senior UK Government officials as they are with airport security staff.


Fluency in spoken and written Portuguese and English is essential.
The job holder will undertake the following key responsibilities:

  • Provide leadership and oversight of the Embassy policy team(s) who lead on each visit to ensure the design and organisation of creative and original programmes that deliver embassy and UK objectives.
  • Lead on coordinating Embassy inputs to London for briefing packs for Ministerial and other senior visitors, taking responsibility for driving up the quality of briefing from teams.
  • Liaise with teams across the Embassy, UK Government departments, Ministerial and Parliamentary private offices to ensure that their needs and requirements are met.
  • Main point of contact with Europe Directorate in Itamaraty, representing the Embassy and the UK professionally, courteously and efficiently. Build a wideranging network of contacts across the Brazilian government and beyond. Use this network and sophisticated communication skills to secure highlevel meetings, ensure appropriate protocol is in place, and deliver UK requests. At times you may need to deliver difficult messages with professionalism.
  • Oversee visits while they are underway, ensuring they run smoothly and troubleshooting where necessary. In some instances, accompany visitors and represent the Embassy with senior external partners.
  • Work with the Political Counsellor to ensure the smooth functioning of the Political Team, providing leadership on corporate processes and overseeing high quality delivery and team wellbeing.
  • Coordinate division of labour between the 4 interns supporting the Political Team and oversee workloads.
  • Contribute to the broader Embassy through participation in corporate initiatives and forming part of the Embassy's crisis response.
Essential qualifications, skills and experience

  • Some understanding of diplomatic relationships between Brazil and other countries.
  • Excellent organisational skills
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Very good writing skills able to communicate clearly in English and engage the help of staff across the Embassy to achieve your objectives.
  • Very good presentational skills for engaging with external stakeholders, including from the Brazilian government.
  • Ability to build relationships with diverse range of stakeholders so that you can call on them for assistance when necessary.
  • Good team player willing to help out colleagues and share the workload on team tasks.
  • Ability to multitask and prioritise, undertaking a range of tasks at the same time.
  • Proactive at spotting where team processes can be improved.
  • Ability to work autonomously.
  • Proven fluency in spoken and written English and Portuguese.
Desirable qualifications, skills and experience

  • Experience of leading governmental visits is highly desired.
