About You and this Role


Liferay seeks a Test Lead to be a champion for building awesome products through skilled testing and test development, risk analysis, and cross-functional team coaching.

This person is expected to work with their cross functional Product Team to develop, advocate, and implement comprehensive quality and testing strategies for their products.

Test Leads will have to manage multiple streams of information and priorities - self-organization and effective time management are crucial traits for a successful Test Lead.

This role can also include leading, mentoring, and managing other QA Engineers on a given cross-functional team.

This role direct reports to the QA Manager and reports operationally to the Product Team Lead.


Key Objectives

  • Manage QA Engineers and handle sensitive information, including performance reviews, growth plans, time off requests, and weekly timesheets
  • Set quarterly priorities for the QA team, following departments OKR's and Product Roadmap
  • Report on relevant KPIs for the health of the Crossfunctional team product
  • Coach Developers and QA Engineers on improving testability, test practice, and strategies
  • Manages from 1 to 7 people directly. In some special cases the number may go up to 10
  • May act as the secondary manager for 1 or more additional people
  • May participate in talent acquision
  • Design and implement agile testing processes for the team's SDLC including but not limited to:
  • Adapting existing Continuous Integration infrastructure to a team's practice
  • Collaborating with team members to develop continuous testing and delivery pipelines
  • Effectively identify risk and lead risk mitigation activities at all levels of the SDLC within a team
  • Analyze existing product design and source code to identify testing and testability improvements
  • Able to iterate and innovate upon existing testing tools and strategies
  • Drive test plans and test strategy for features based on established risk profiles and use cases
  • Demonstrate an expertlevel understanding of testing tools, testing strategies, and testing technologies
  • Collaborate with the testers, developer leads, project managers, and other product stakeholders to drive testing strategy and approach for the crossfunctional team
  • Champion continuous improvement and communication of testing strategy, execution, and status with the Crossfunctional Team
  • Lead operations for functional manual and automated testing within a team

Required Qualifications

  • ISTQB Advanced Level certification or equivalent test practice experience
  • The ability to effectively work in cross functional teams
  • Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or an equivalent level of knowledge
  • Advanced Written and Verbal English Communication Level
  • Experience leading and mentoring crossfunctional testing teams
  • Experience in talent acquisition and people management
  • Expert level in developing automated tests (e.g. Webdriver, Cucumber, etc.) following maintainable design patterns (e.g. Page Object, etc.)
  • Strong working knowledge of common languages (e.g. Java, Javascript)
  • Experience implementing Continuous Integration (e.g. Jenkins, Bamboo, etc.) as part of an Agile Testing methodology
  • Has strong practical knowledge of SCM/VCS' (Git / Mercurial / SVN) and related experience working with Github based development
  • Experience using Issue Management systems (e.g. JIRA, etc.)
  • Strong critical thinking and problem solving skills to break down complex problems
  • The ability to invite collaboration, foster creativity, and enable team members to reach their full potential
