The Department of Global Communications / Strategic Communication Division internship is for an initial period of two months, with an opportunity for extension up to, but not exceeding, six months, pending on the needs of the department.

The internship is UNPAID and full-time.

Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

This internship is located in the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) in Rio de Janeiro, within the Information Centres Service (ICS), Strategic Communications Division (SCD), Department of Global Communications (DGC).

Duration: 6 months period in 2023.


Responsibilities:

Following the instructions and under the supervision of the National Information Officer (NIO), the responsibilities may include but are not limited to:1) Support to event management and organization:

  • Assist in organizing events, campaigns and public outreach activities;
  • Support outreach efforts with partners and the UN System in Brazil; and
  • Support the organization of special events and information campaigns, including liaising with relevant UN partners to highlight and publicize key activities such as the observance of special days years and the launching of UN reports.
2) Assist in information support to UNIC-Rio's communications and public relations activities:

  • Support the preparation of responses to complex information requests and inquiries received at UNIC-Rio;
  • Draft press releases and other communication documents; and
  • Assist compiling of basic information for use in the preparation and production of communications products and services about the United Nations' work in Brazil as well as priority global campaigns and official observances.

Education

1) Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent or higher) in the fields of Journalism, Advertising, Public Relations, and Communications or be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent) in the fields of Journalism, Advertising, Public Relations, and Communications.

3) Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and

  • Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
Work Experience

Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in Portuguese and knowledge of English (at least read, write and translate) are required for the internship.
