Organization Profile:
NESsT currently manages a loan fund actively investing in social enterprises looking to raise capital from $50K to $500K.

The fund provides senior, secured debt to companies that are profitable and looking to scale their operations to have a stronger and more sustainable social impact.

The loan fund team is based in Lima, Peru, with activities in Peru and Colombia and growing into other countries in South America, including Brazil, in the next year.


Position Overview:


NESst is currently looking for a 2-3-month intern to undertake a feasibility study and launch a plan to expand its current social impact investment debt fund into Brazil in 4Q 2023 or 1Q 2024.

The position will report to the Fund Director located in Lima, Peru.

The position can be remote but ideally would be based in Sao Paulo or another office location of NESsT in Brazil.


Key Duties & Responsibilities:
The intern will research and put together a paper that evaluates the following areas:

  • Evaluate the market interest rate levels of alternative sources of funding (in dollars and/or real) that social enterprises currently have and determine if the cost of capital for the fund would be attractive for social enterprises in the region.
  • Evaluate the legal regulations governing lenders in Brazil that would affect a foreigndomiciled loan company (restrictions on interest, restrictions on guaranty structures)
  • Evaluate what taxes the fund would need to consider, including withholding taxes and income taxes.
  • Evaluate any other restrictions or issues related to capital inflows and outflows from a foreigndomiciled fund if they are not captured in points 2 and
  • Evaluate the exchange rate challenges that the fund might face for a loan fund designed to invest in dollars.
  • Evaluate legal setup costs and conditions to have the fund operating in Brazil (registration costs, legal contract setup costs, powers of attorney, signing requirements to obtain secured lending positions)
  • Identify 2 law firms that could be good partners to help the fund in Brazil.
  • Identify 2 accounting firms that could be good partners to help the fund in Brazil.
  • Evaluate an opinion on the initial pipeline coming from NESsT acceleration activities and potential shortterm investment prospects.

Qualifications:

  • A bachelor's degree, ideally in economics, finance, industrial engineering, or business administration.
  • Experience working in Latin America.
  • Advanced verbal and written skills in Portuguese, ideally a person born and raised in Latin America.
  • Advanced verbal and written skills in English.
  • Preferable but not required to have verbal and written skills in Spanish
  • Ability to effectively work under pressure and manage multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Demonstrated experience in and commitment to social impact. This can include volunteer positions. Experience with social enterprises is a plus.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Produce highquality work within tight time constraints
  • Ability to be flexible, resourceful and innovative in a small, dynamic, nonprofit environment.
  • Familiarity and comfort with Microsoft Office and Google Apps.

Location:

The position could be remote, but preference would be for the person to be based in Sao Paulo, Brazil or near other existing offices of NESsT in Brazil.
